Humans of High River – Carter Wilson

Meet 12-year-old Carter Wilson of High River.

This born & raised kid of our community is on cloud nine these days.  In December he’s headed to Las Vegas!  Not your usual child destination, but when you’re a rodeo kid there’s no place you’d rather be than Vegas during Wrangler National Finals Rodeo time!

A year ago he was also there, as a spectator watching rodeo action.  What’s really cool….they also have a Jr National Finals Rodeo…and Carter set a goal to come back one day to compete.  In the Spring of 2018 he started riding mini-broncs.  Fast forward 6 short months and he’s headed to compete on the National level!  When we chatted with Carter after school this week he said “when I saw the mini-broncs last year in Vegas, I thought it would be fun to try it.”  And I guess that’s how our cowboys are born.

When asked what his favourite thing about High River is, he replied “That it’s a good agricultural town.  It’s awesome it’s close to the city but still feels like a small town.”  This power-house future star of rodeo has been coached by some of his idols in the industry – Layton Green, Zeke Thurston and Sam Kelts.  And his bucket list goal now includes riding saddle bronc like his mentors in the NFR.   He’s a tough one…we think he could do it…what you can’t tell in the picture is that his free arm (the one that isn’t in the rigging when he rides the horse) is currently in a cast!

If Carter could change anything about High River he thinks all we need to do is add more mini-bronc events for more kids to get into the sport of rodeo.

You can follow Carter on instagram for his Vegas journey @cheifnroper.  Future is looking bright over here!
