Up the Grade – Environment (Vital Signs)

We have a great opportunity before us to ‘Up the Grade’ from our 2018 Vital Signs Report in Environment.  As a community we gave our town a B+ in this key area of life.   We celebrated the following three areas:

  1. The number of natural spaces and parks that are easy to access.
  2. The opportunities for active transportation such as walking, cycling and running.
  3. The appreciation and maintenance of green spaces.

Together we identified one of our top three priorities to be the ‘maintenance and expansion of green spaces and pathways.’   There is both Operations and Parks and Recreation departments within the Town of High River…but as we proudly declare in Our High River our community’s vitality lies in our hands.  So…it makes total sense to us to get out to take part in the 15th Annual Green Sweep and Electronics Recycling Round Up on Saturday May 4, 2019 and partner with the Town to give some love to our green spaces.

We thought it was really cool to discover this event has been happening for 15 years.  That’s a celebration all unto itself.  The success of Green Sweep is due to volunteers.  So bring out the whole family to take part.

#FUNFACT: We have 746 acres of green space in High River!

The day will start off with a free breakfast to fuel up and divvy out the clean up tasks, such as raking leaves, collecting branches, picking up garbage and more.  In-conjunction with Green Sweep, the Town has partnered with Alberta Recycling to collect unwanted electronics such as televisions, computer monitors, keyboards, mice, speakers, desktop computers, laptops, notebooks, tablets, servers, printers, and more.

Tipping fees at the Foothills Regional Landfill will also be waived for current High River residents on May 2-4, as well as for household hazardous waste in quantities under 20 litres.  Registration is not required to take part in Green Sweep – just show up at the Bob Snodgrass Recreation Complex parking lot prepared to help clean up High River!  There will be family-fun activities, hosted by the Town’s Parks and Recreation division, and a thank you BBQ lunch to wrap up the morning’s events are also planned for noon.

Alright High River…let’s do this!

‘A’ here we come!
